Geography of Halkidiki

Halkidiki is a peninsula with a distinct form, which is found in the center of Macedonia. It is geographically separated from the rest of Macedonia with a conceivable line that is extended the cape of Karampournou, it penetrates Hortiati, the hills southern of Lagada and the lake. The main peninsula of Halkidiki leads to three smaller peninsulas: the Kassandra, the Sithonia and the peninsula of Atho (Saint Mountain).

The geomorphology of Halkidiki is extremely interenting. It resembles an inclined geological level, while moving from western to eastern. Thus, in the western side and in Kassandra we find most of the plains, in the central region there are raised the mounts of Hortiati,of Holomonta and of Itamos and in the eastern point the splendid mountainous mass of mount Athos.

History of Halkidiki

Greek mythology often refers to Halkidiki: the earthquake giant, called Egelados is buried in Kassandra. Athos has been reformed by the rock that Egelados threw against the Gods, and Sithonia owns its name to Sithonas, son of Poseidon. There are many myths. However, they suggest the effort that was made to interpret their foibles, way back from the ancient times.

The scientific research, however, has shown that the geomorphology of the paleontologic Halkidiki was rather different than today's one. The flora and fauna was definitely different. The fossil relics of elephantoid and other species that have been found in Nikiti and have been traced in Vrasta, in Trilgia, e.t.c witness another era, which probably mankind never met.
